In a closely watched electoral battle, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) has secured a resounding victory in the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election held on April 6th. LDF was leading with 96 seats and United Democratic Front (UDF) became the opposition with 41 seats.
Facing strong competition from the UDF, led by the Indian National Congress, the LDF gave importance to its commitment to inclusive growth and progress for all sections of society. The UDF, on the other hand, highlighted alleged corruption in the LDF government and promised new development projects to get the votes in their favor. Despite the intense electoral battle, the results declared the LDF as the clear winner, securing a majority with 6 seats more than in the previous elections. This victory marked a historic moment as the incumbent government is re-elected for the second consecutive term which is a very rare thing in Kerala’s political landscape.

Seats won in 2016 and 2021 elections
There are a total of 11 elected women MLAs in the 2021 elections from various constituencies in Kerala. However, there is an increase in the number of women’s representation it is nothing near to the equal representation of all genders. Kerala is a state that gives importance to female education and uplifts them by giving reservations in local bodies, the legislative representation is very low as the rest of the 129 members in the assembly are men.

The significance of good educational qualifications for elected representatives lies in their ability to navigate complex policy issues, craft effective legislation, and communicate with constituents and stakeholders. Even after Kerala is the state with the highest literacy rates a fourth of the total representatives have only completed their 10th and almost 40% of the total candidates have only completed their 12th.

Section 2: Educational Qualifications of Winners in 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly Election
Even though it is said that voters in Kerala often expect their elected representatives to have a strong educational background it signifies competence, intelligence, and a commitment to learning. The current ruling party has more candidates who have just completed their schooling, on the other side the opposition has more educated representatives. On one side it is said that education is not the biggest quality for being a politician or leader. In the long run, many of these elected representatives themselves have faced issues because of language problems or lack of knowledge.
Section 3: Criminal Cases and Legal History

Why having criminal cases is not still a problem for competing in elections is a very big question mark, it is surprising to know the fact that 87 out of the 140 elected representatives have criminal cases in their records. In many cases, the number of cases is not just 1 or 2 which should be seriously looked upon
Women’s representation is something that should increase and criminal cases should decrease along with keeping the standard of educational qualification of elected representatives at least shortly. The government was re-elected with a lot of expectations from the common public but many of the times they were not completely able to meet them. A lot of problems and controversies are arising in this second Pinarayi regime but the latest budget has brought a ray of hope to the people.
