Political tensions rise as Assam Chief Minister hints at post-election arrest for Rahul Gandhi amidst FIR in alleged violence during ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’
The police noticed alleged violence during Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,’ and they registered a case against many Congress leaders. Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, declared that Rahul Gandhi would be arrested after this year’s Lok Sabha elections. The FIR accuses Gandhi of inciting violence in Assam.
Sarma mentioned, “We filed an FIR, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) will investigate. He (Gandhi) will be arrested after the Lok Sabha elections,” during a program in Nazira, Sibsagar district.
The Lok Sabha elections might happen before May this year.
Why Assam Police Filed FIR Against Rahul Gandhi?
The Assam police took notice of alleged violence during Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ and registered an FIR against many Congress leaders. The charges include criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, rioting, assault on public servants, damaging public property, and more. The case has been transferred to the Assam CID.
Himanta Biswa Sarma ordered the FIR against Gandhi for allegedly encouraging the crowd to break barricades and enter Guwahati on Tuesday. In the scuffle, several Congress members and police personnel sustained minor injuries.
The Assam government said Congress workers were advised to take a highway to Kamrup (Rural) district, but they attempted to use the Guwahati route. On Monday, Sarma asked Gandhi not to visit the birthplace of Assamese icon Srimanta Sankardeva in Nagaon district due to Ram Temple festivities. Gandhi was later stopped from visiting the shrine.
Rahul Gandhi Responds
Rahul Gandhi challenged the Assam government to file as many cases as they want. He stated, “I don’t know how Himanta Biswa Sarma got the idea that he can intimidate me by filing cases… File 25 more cases. BJP-RSS can’t intimidate me.”
Sarma responded, “How did they reach Barpeta from Nagaon… by a rocket launcher? It is just that they were asked not to take a particular road but another. They indulged in violent behaviour, attacking public servants on duty.”
Gandhi and Sarma have been exchanging heated remarks. Both have called each other coward and corrupt. Sarma claimed Gandhi fled the city in his fancy bus after instigating violence during the Yatra.
