Quick and simple UPI transactions allows Indian tourists to access the Eiffel Tower experience
France is now the first European country to accept online transactions from India through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Indian visitors can easily buy tickets for the iconic landmark Eiffel Tower online using their UPI-powered apps, making easier the process. This announcement was made during an event organized by the Indian Embassy in Paris to celebrate India’s Republic Day.
The collaboration between NIPL (National Payments Corporation of India International Payments Limited) and Lyra, a leading French company in online and proximity payments, made it possible for the iconic Eiffel Tower to accept UPI payments in France.
This expansion is most critical as Indian tourists are the second largest international population visiting the Eiffel Tower. At present, they can safely undertake frictionless online transactions based on the quick response code to be scanned on the merchant’s website and report payments.
The step allows UPI users in India to conveniently purchase Eiffel Tower tickets, marking a milestone in digital payment acceptance between the two countries. The partnership between NIPL and Lyra was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2022.
Addressing the need for more cost-effective cross-border transactions, the Reserve Bank of India deputy governor, T Rabi Sankar, highlighted in September 2023 that, considering the availability of inexpensive data connectivity, it was unacceptable that the average costs of such transactions remained high.
Further expanding its reach, NIPL signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Al Etihad Payments in Abu Dhabi in October 2023 to facilitate cross-border transactions. The National Payments Corporation of India is actively in conversations with the United States, European countries, and West Asian countries to extend UPI services worldwide.
