In a significant development, former Chief Minister and current lawmaker Basavaraj Bommai have leveled serious accusations against the state government, accusing it of shielding criminals and rapists in State Karnataka.
Speaking at a press conference in the city on Saturday, Bommai expressed concerns about the increasing incidents of crime and the government’s alleged inaction. He pointed to the recent sexual harassment case in the Haveri region and emphasized that another rape case in Belagavi has now come to light. According to Bommai, such cases are emerging from various places, revealing a troubling pattern.
This charge was leveled against the police by the former Chief Minister despite increased reports of criminal activities like sales, gambling, and black market liquor. Second, he asserted that such an alliance between criminals and the authorities of law is due to taking bribes by the government in exchange for transfers within the police.
Bommai mentioned the government response as a matter of concern and pointed out to Haveri sexual assault case. He asserted that despite the calls for a SIT to investigate into matter, no urgent steps have been undertaken by the government. He blamed the police for breaching ethics surveillance and cited their ignoring criminal activities because of political interference.
He further emphasized the need for a comprehensive inquiry into the Haveri case, stressing the importance of filing cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act promptly. Bommai vowed to pursue legal avenues to ensure the case reaches a satisfactory resolution and justice is served.
Touching upon another issue, Bommai highlighted an alleged attempt to suppress a case involving the payment of Rs 50 lakh to a girl. He urged the government to pay attention to the health concerns of the girls involved in forensic medical cases.
Bommai argued that the government’s apparent inability to maintain public safety was evident when a Dalit woman was allegedly attacked by unknown assaulters, an incident that reportedly happened in Belagavi. He accused the government of turning a blind eye to criminals and suggested that police in his district were being led by local officials.
The former Chief Minister criticized the decision to transfer the Belagavi case to CID and started doubting the two-sided attitude practiced by the government. He concluded by accusing that an attempt is being made to protect criminals for political reasons and he along with his fellow Opposition leaders would launch a dharna against the deterioration of lawlessness.
