November 26, 2008, is a sad reminder of the terror that took place in the heart of Mumbai and will go down in Indian history. Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan is a hero whose bravery and selflessness endure despite the city facing one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in its history.

A brave National Security Guard (NSG) officer named Major Unnikrishnan was instrumental in the 26/11 attacks. He became a symbol of unbreakable spirit and sacrifice because of his unselfish acts of bravery and tenacity in the face of difficulty. On the tragic night of November 26, several well-coordinated attacks in Mumbai targeted famous buildings, including the Oberoi Trident, the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, and Nariman House. A member of the NSG team assigned to deal with the hostage situation at the Taj Hotel was Major Unnikrishnan.

Major Unnikrishnan led his team with resolute determination and showed extraordinary bravery throughout the operation. Stories of his courage in the firing line, leading his group through the dangerous hotel corridors, and freeing the hostages have left a lasting impression on the grieving country. Sadly, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan gave his life to ensure the security and safety of others. He suffered fatal injuries early on November 28 while participating in the operation to drive terrorists out of the Taj Hotel. The highest standards of duty and honour were exemplified by his bravery in the face of peril and his sacrifice for the country.

The legacy of Major Unnikrishnan goes far beyond his valiant deeds on that terrible night. For his extraordinary courage and leadership, he was posthumously given India’s highest gallantry award during peacetime, the Ashoka Chakra. The country lamented the passing of a real hero, and his name came to represent fortitude and selflessness. Many Indians hold a special place in their hearts for Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, even above the medals and recognition he has received. The nation’s youth are still motivated by his story, which serves as a reminder of the unselfish commitment and sacrifice that the uniform stands for. By naming streets, schools, and other establishments in his honor, the country has ensured that his memory will never fade.

The nation is constantly reminded of the unbreakable spirit that manifested itself on that fateful night by Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s valiant actions during the Mumbai terror attacks. His sacrifice is a testament to his unwavering devotion to duty and the resilience that unites all of us as we honour the heroism of 26/11.
